    Description

For sale is a rare antique bronze betel nut box dating to the late 18th-early 19th century.
These boxes were once used for transporting betel nuts (areca nuts) to the upper class across southeast Asia. The previous owner informed us that the box was purchased in Mandalay, Burma during the 1940s shortly before the collapse of colonial rule under the British.
This style of betel nut box can be found throughout southeast Asia and the Philippines. It has been suggested that this box might have been made in the Philippines and ended up in Burma via oceanic trade.
The box features a lovely hand hammered lotus leaf pattern throughout. The body of the box was hand cast, as evidenced by its naturally uneven shape inside.
When opened, there are several compartments. It appears that there were 2 more inner doors at one time, which are missing.
Please see all photos for details and feel free to message with any questions. Cheers!
