Description
You are looking at a vintage Set/8 Burmese Opium Weights. Hand cast from Brass with a Silver Chemical process which now shows heavy oxidation due to age. Opium weights were commonly used in the golden triangle, an area surrounded by Burma, Laos, and Thailand, in the early 1900s up until the early 2000s. Each weight represents a particular unit of measure. Opium weights were used to weigh everything from Opium, to Gold, to day-to-day items such as rice, fruits and grains.This particular opium weight set is made in the shape of a swan or a Hintha or Hamsa bird. The Hintha/Hamsa bird is an aquatic bird of passage such as goose or swan. Its image or symbols is used in Southeast Asian culture as a spiritual symbol and a decorative element.
