Thai Bowl With Fish Decoration Celadon Sawankhalok 15th Century

This impressive rustic celadon bowl dates from around the 15th century in Sawankhalok Thailand. Chinese potters from the Longquan region of China during the 13th century set up kilns to produce their famous celadon wares. This production soon became export in nature. The development of the Thai kilns is explained by the stop of Chinese porcelain exports, following the edict of Emperor Hongwu (1328-1398) in 1371 which prohibited international trade. This bowl is most likely Thai rather than Ming Dynasty Longquan from China due to the high Kaolin content, however the wares were very similar. The barbed rim, thick pooled green glaze and fish motif are very common of the early production. As is the warping during firing as techniques had not progressed to produce the fine wares that were to follow. This is a large bowl and probably would have be utilized as a funerary piece due to the three fish design impressed on the piece. These fish represent birth, marriage and death. 12" by 3"
