    Description

    Tozai Martaban Storage Jar Handmade in Thailand.           The Jar is of globular shape, with a high sloping neck and wide shoulders: the small mouth has an reverted rolled lip covered by a smooth brown glaze. The inside of mouth and neck is glazed.  On the shoulder are two pairs of horizontal loop-handles. The base is glazed with Original Tozai Home Label with Item#.
    A Martaban jar is a storage vessel made for shipping food and water. It was used both on the western East India trade and among the local Djonk trade. The jars are generally said to come from the city of Martaban, west of Bangkok on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, hence their name.
